Stereotypes Vs. Archetypes

Stereotypes and archetypes are commonly used as mental short-cuts for identifying and orienting oneself with the other members of society. Why are stereotypes seen as negative and archetypes seen as positive? Is there even a distinction between a stereotype and an archetype?
